Website or Google Business Profile: which comes first?
What a Google Business Profile does, what a website does, and the order to set them up in if you want more calls from local customers.
When someone in Pretoria searches "plumber near me" or "electrician Moreleta Park", two things decide whether they call you: whether you show up, and whether what they see makes them trust you. Your Google Business Profile handles the first. Your website handles the second.
What a Google Business Profile does
Your Google Business Profile is the panel that appears in Google Search and Maps with your name, reviews, photos, hours and a call button. For local searches, it's often the first thing people see, before any website.
What a website does
A website is where people go to decide. It answers the questions a profile can't: what exactly you do, what it costs, what past clients say and how to book. It's also yours. No platform can change its rules on you overnight.
Side by side
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Once-off build plus hosting |
| Main job | Getting found locally | Turning visitors into enquiries |
| Who controls it | You | |
| Shows up in Maps | Yes | Through your profile |
| Explains services and prices in depth | Briefly | Yes |
The order I recommend
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.
- Fill in everything: the right categories, services, service areas, hours and real photos.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every one.
- Build a website and link it from your profile.
- Keep your details identical everywhere. Use the same business name, phone number and area on your profile, your website and directories.
- Measure: watch calls and website visits from your profile, and searches in Google Search Console.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a vague category, so Google doesn't know when to show you.
- A different phone number on the website and the profile.
- Stock photos instead of your own work, team and vehicles.
- Ignoring reviews, especially the bad ones.
- A website that's slow or hard to use on a phone, which wastes the click your profile earned.
Where I can help
I set up and optimise Google Business Profiles as part of local SEO, and I build fast, mobile-first websites, from a basic one-pager at R3,450 to fully custom builds, designed to turn that local search traffic into calls. If you're not sure which to fix first, ask me and I'll give you an honest answer.
Questions people also ask
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Every service page lists exactly what you pay once-off and what runs monthly (like the care plan at R350/m for hosting, security and small updates). What you see is what you pay.
Can I mix services?
That's the whole point. Most clients start with a website, then add automation, ads or video as they grow — everything is built to connect.
When can I cancel monthly services?
Anytime. Send a message saying you'd like to cancel and your subscription is closed within 72 hours — no lock-in contracts.
Do you build online stores?
Yes — e-commerce builds from 30 to 200+ products with payment gateways, reviews and abandoned-cart automation. Ask about it on the Website Design page or in the form below.
Do you work with overseas clients?
Yes — I'm based in Pretoria, South Africa, and work with select UK and US clients remotely. Time zones have never been a problem.
Does a Google Business Profile cost anything?
No. Google Business Profiles are free. You only pay if you hire someone to set it up or manage it for you.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without an office or shop?
Yes. Service-area businesses, like plumbers or mobile mechanics, can hide their street address and list the areas they serve instead.
Is a Facebook page enough instead of a website?
It helps, but you don't control it, it doesn't rank well for most local searches, and it's harder to turn visitors into bookings. A website is the home you own; social pages point people to it.
